What an incredible weekend! This past Saturday, our team at Brighter Health Counseling had an absolute blast celebrating at the Lansing Pride: Love Out Loud Festival. Connecting with the community, sharing smiles, and witnessing the beautiful, vibrant mosaic of queer joy right here in Lansing was deeply life-affirming.
Pride Month is a vital reminder of how far the community has come, but it is also a time to recognize the unique mental health journeys within the LGBTQ+ population. Finding yourself, processing trauma, and unlearning societal shame require immense courage. One of the most powerful tools for validation, self-discovery, and healing is literature. Stories reflect our shared experiences and let us know we are not alone.
If you are looking to expand your reading list, dive into these five incredible books that explore LGBTQ+ history, survival, identity, and love:

What Are Friends For? (Alexis Hall)
A witty, heartwarming Regency-era queer romance that explores the beauty of companionship and identity. The story beautifully tackles how love, acceptance, and deep platonic bonds can form the strongest foundations for our chosen families.
The Girl Who Survived (Lisa Jackson)
A gripping thriller that centers on a protagonist who must navigate deep-seated psychological trauma and survival. While it is a dark mystery, its themes of resilience and facing past demons resonate strongly with anyone working through complex childhood trauma.
The Book of Awesome Queer Heroes (Rosswood and Archambeau)
A phenomenal educational resource that profiles influential historical and modern figures across sports, science, politics, and the arts. This book serves as a love letter to the community, highlighting how queer individuals have shaped our world for the better.
Am I Safe Here? (Donn Short)
An eye-opening, research-driven look at the lives of LGBTQ+ youth facing marginalization and bullying in schools. Short elevates the voices of teens as experts, proving that real safety comes from a culture of equity and social justice rather than superficial security.
Letters to My Younger Queer Self (Daniel Harding)
A deeply poignant and uplifting collection of letters written by prominent queer voices across entertainment, activism, and politics. Each contributor shares the wisdom, comfort, and advice they wish they had received while growing up, offering readers a beautiful path toward self-acceptance.

At Brighter Health Counseling, we understand that living authentically can bring both immense joy and unique obstacles. Whether you are navigating your coming-out journey, healing from systemic trauma, or looking for a safe space to talk, our affirmative therapists are here to support you. Happy Pride Month, Lansing! Keep loving out loud.
