Everyone has routines—even if you don't realize it. Maybe you always make coffee before checking your phone in the morning. Maybe you unwind with a certain show before bed. These small, repeated actions shape our days—and, over time, our lives. But what is a routine, really? A routine is a set of habits or actions that you do regularly, often without thinking too much about them. They can be intentional or accidental. The key is that routines create structure, rhythm, and predictability in our lives. The importance of a routine goes far beyond just being organized. Here’s what a strong routine can do for you:

Manage stress: Predictability helps calm the mind. Knowing what’s coming next reduces anxiety.

Improve mental health: Consistency can support better sleep, mood regulation, and even resilience.

Reduce decision fatigue: Having a plan for everyday tasks frees up mental energy for more important decisions.

Give you control: Routines help you take charge of your time and align your days with your intentions and values.

Routines aren't just about getting more done—they’re about living on purpose. So, where to even begin? Even if you're not new to routines, being intentional about building one that supports your goals and values can make a big difference. Here is a place to start:

  1. Reflect on your values: What matters most to you? Family? Health? Creativity? Career? Identifying your values gives your routine a foundation to build on.

  2. Set goals that reflect those values: If health is a value, maybe your goal is to move your body each day. If connection is a value, maybe it’s scheduling weekly check-ins with l.

  3. Start simple: Don’t try to overhaul your life in one go. Begin with one small habit. Example: Want to read more? Read 5 minutes before bed and increase to 10 minutes when you're ready.

  4. Create a list or schedule: Writing it down helps make it real. A checklist, calendar,  get an accountability buddy, or habit tracker can keep you on track.

  5. Reflect and adjust: Check in with yourself regularly. Is the routine working for you? Does it still align with your values and goals? It’s okay to tweak it.

  6. Celebrate your wins: Give yourself credit for showing up and practicing self-respect.

Your routine doesn’t need to be fancy, long, or perfect. It just needs to support the life you want to live.

What’s a routine that has helped you so far? Or one you want to work on? Drop it in the comments we would love to hear about it.
