September is Suicide Prevention Month, a vital time to remember that while suicide is a major public health issue, it is entirely preventable. When we open up honest conversations about mental health, learn to recognize the warning signs, and rally together as a community, we have the power to save lives.

At Brighter Health Counseling, we believe that no one should have to navigate their darkest moments alone. Throughout this important month, we want to share critical information on how to spot the signs of distress in your loved ones, how to offer help, and how you can join us in making a meaningful difference in our community.

Suicide Statistics: Understanding the Impact

Suicide affects millions of people worldwide, cutting across every age, race, and background.

  • A Leading Cause of Death: Suicide remains among the top leading causes of death in the United States, particularly among adolescents and young adults.

  • Widespread Struggle: Millions of adults seriously think about suicide each year, highlighting the critical need for accessible mental health resources.

  • The Power of Prevention: Research shows that early intervention, open conversations, and community support significantly reduce suicide rates.

Warning Signs: What to Look For

Distress doesn't always look the same in everyone, but there are common behavioral and emotional shifts that indicate a friend or family member may be struggling:

  • Verbal Cues: Talking about wanting to die, feeling like a burden to others, having no reason to live, or feeling trapped in unbearable pain.

  • Behavioral Changes: Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities they used to enjoy. You might also notice increased use of alcohol or drugs, reckless behavior, or giving away prized possessions.

  • Mood Shifts: Severe mood swings, sudden expressions of rage or anger, deep sadness, or a sudden, unusual calm after a long period of depression (which can sometimes indicate they have made a decision).

How You Can Help

If you suspect someone you care about is struggling, you don't need to be a professional therapist to make a difference:

  1. Ask directly: Do not be afraid to use the word "suicide." Asking "Are you thinking about suicide?" does not put the idea in their head; instead, it shows you are a safe person to talk to.

  2. Listen without judgment: Let them express their feelings completely. Avoid minimizing their pain or giving unsolicited advice.

  3. Keep them safe: If they are in immediate danger, do not leave them alone. Remove access to lethal means and connect them with crisis resources.

  4. Connect them to help: Encourage them to reach out to a professional or a crisis line.

Walk With Us: Out of the Darkness

Brighter Health Counseling is proud to partner with Out of the Darkness to promote suicide awareness, healing, and hope.

We are thrilled to announce that the Brighter Health team will be at the upcoming Out of the Darkness walk on September 19th! These walks are incredibly powerful events that bring families, friends, survivors, and supporters together to walk for a common cause: to bring suicide out of the darkness and fund life-saving research and education.

We invite everyone in the community to show up, walk with us, and support suicide awareness. Whether you are walking in memory of a loved one, to support your own mental health journey, or to stand in solidarity with our community, your presence matters. Let’s walk together to show that hope is real and help is available.
